  • What are the APRs? The annual percentage rate--APR--is the way of stating the interest rate you will pay if you carry over a balance, take out a cash advance, or transfer a balance from another card

  • Multiple APRs A single credit card may have several APRs: One APR for purchases, another for cash advances, and yet another for balance transfers

  • The APRs for cash advances and balance transfers often are higher than the APR for purchases (for example, 14% for purchases, 18% for cash advances, and 19% for balance transfers)

  • Most credit cards do not give a grace period for cash advances and balance transfers

  • Charged when you use the card for a cash advance; may be a flat fee (for example, $3.00) or a percentage of the cash advance (for example, 3%) Balance-transfer fee

  • Charged when you transfer a balance from another credit card (Your credit card company may send you “checks” to pay off the other card

  • The balance is transferred when you use one of these checks to pay the amount due on the other card.) Late-payment fee

  • Some credit card companies charge a fee if you pay by telephone (that is, if you arrange by phone for payment to be transferred from your bank to the company) or to cover the costs of reporting to credit bureaus, reviewing your account, or providing other customer services

  • Do you really need the item? Would you have purchased it at full price? If not, is the sale price really a good deal given that you wouldn't have otherwise bought it? Thursday August 3, 2006 | Beware of Credit Card Offers - Read the Fine Print Before you sign up for that awesome credit card which is offering you 0% APR on balance transfers, make sure you read the fine print - most of those offers charge a fee on the transfer, and that fee may not qualify for the 0% APR

  • Balance transfer fees are typically around 3% of the balance transferred

  • Many cards cap the fee at $50 or $75; however, some cards don't, and if you're transferring a balance of several thousand dollars, that can result in you incurring fees around $150 on a $5000 balance transfer

  • The good news is that with the competition so fierce, you're more likely to be able to get a credit card with a low interest rate, and transfer your balance from a higher interest card, or use the increased competition to lower your interest rate on your current card

Credit and ATM Cards - What To Do If They're Lost or Stolen
Covers how to limit your financial loss, how to protect your cards, whether to buy a registration service, and how to file a complaint.

  • The Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) offer procedures for you to use if your cards are lost or stolen

  • ATM or Debit Card Loss or Fraudulent Transfers (EFTA)

  • If you report an ATM or debit card missing before it's used without your permission, the EFTA says the card issuer cannot hold you responsible for any unauthorized transfers

  • However, if you don't report the loss within two business days after you discover the loss, you could lose up to $500 because of an unauthorized transfer

  • You also risk unlimited loss if you fail to report an unauthorized transfer within 60 days after your bank statement containing unauthorized use is mailed to you

  • However, for unauthorized transfers involving only your debit card number (not the loss of the card), you are liable only for transfers that occur after 60 days following the mailing of your bank statement containing the unauthorized use and before you report the loss

  • If unauthorized transfers show up on your bank statement, report them to the card issuer as quickly as possible

  • Once you've reported the loss of your ATM or debit card, you cannot be held liable for additional unauthorized transfers that occur after that time
